home
Beggars Bridge is what is known as a pack horse
bridge and crosses the river Esk. This is the story surrounding the building of
the bridge...Thomas Ferris was a young man from Egton who was
courting a young lady called Agnes Richardson the Daughter of the local squire.
Because Thomas was a poor man he was not an acceptable future Son in Law for
him, so he realised that to be accepted into the family he need to seek his
fortune and decided to seek it at sea. The night before he set sale from Whitby
he was due to meet Agnes but was unable to do so as the river Esk was in a high
flood, so he left for sea without so much as a goodbye. He left the following
day and he made his fortune at sea and returned to become the highly sought
after position as the Mayor of Hull city, he married Agnes and in 1619 paid for
the building of Beggars Bridge so the problems he encountered wouldnt happen to
anyone else.
