Castle Howard
home
The building of Castle Howard was
started in 1699 and was not to be fully completed for over 100 years, started
by the 3rd
Earl of Carlisle he gave the job to John Vanburgh who at the time had never
built anything in his life before! The huge dome was something that was added
later on and was never intended to be built when the house was first planned,
its is also unique in that no other private residence had ever had such a
structure before.
A fire in the 1940s destroyed not only the original dome but also 20 upstairs
rooms and all the damage wasnt fully repaired until the early 1960s.
Castle Howard was used in the highly successful TV programme Brideshead
Revisited made in 1981 and shown world wide which helped put Castle Howard
firmly on the map and a favourite place for visitors as 200,000 people visit
each year.
