Set in the Rye valley in North Yorkshire, there
was an earlier castle on the site but was replaced by the current one in the
12th century, the castle is surrounded by a large double ditch. The castles
defences did not have a great deal to do until during the civil war of 1644 the
castle was under siege for 3 months by the Parliamentary forces and was not
until the Royalists ran out of food did the siege collapse. After this siege
most of the castle was then destroyed to stop this happening again.
A Tudour house still remains mostly intact after the previous owner left there in
the 1800s to move into near bye Duncombe Park.
