Pontefract Castles lies in the West
Yorkshire area, this castle was one of the most impressive castles ever built in
England because of its large size and more than anything and had 8 large towers.
There cant be many castles mentioned in the Domesday book but Pontefract was!
One of the more impressive "visitors" was King Richard the 2nd who died in the
castle.
There is not a great deal left of what was one a massive building, most of the
damage was done during the civil war of the 1640s when they had 3 sieges here,
and when the last one was over the castle was mostly pulled down by the
Parliementary forces and aided by the towns people of Pontefract who where fed
up with the constant battles taking place on their doorstep!
One of the more interesting features today at the castle is to see the carvings
in the Magazine/Dungeon carved in the solid rock on which the castle stands,
some of these dated in the 1600s.
