Whitby Abbey
home
The Abbey was founded in 657, built by Hilda and
was known as a double monastery, 200 years later it
destroyed by the Vikings and rebuilt in the late 1070s.The Abbey was a most
important building and was a well supported place until the dissolution. Not
only was the Abbey pulled down during the dissolution but many parts later fell
down due to the storms and the position in which it was built high up on the
cliffs overlooking Whitby town.
Also after the dissolution in 1538 parts of the Abbey were used in a nearby family
home which ironically is now the home of the Abbey museum! (see photo).
